Also side note, cut-off scores for districts are now posted and can be viewed at the website: www.semmea.org

Acapella Singing

When you sing Acapella, it is so important that you sing confidently and feel the rhythmic pulse inside.

Here are some Pentatonix performances from the Sing Off to give you an idea.  I highly recommend watching all their performances (and performances from other great groups on that show as well: Afro Blue, Committed, Home Free, etc)

Five Hebrew Love Songs Video

Concert Choir Students,

Please watch this video of Eric Whitacre conducting a professional choir singing the Five Hebrew Love Songs

This is how the whole piece is supposed to sound when it is performed live.

Some Key Items Of Note:
- Listen to the pronunciation of the "K" syllable onsets in Kalla Kala -- that's what we need!
- Listen to the balance of the ladies on the first movement, beautiful
- Listen to the swells of the dynamics throughout -- this ebb and flow is crucial
- Listen to the tone colors created in Movement 4 Eyze Sheleg.. all parts flow in together

The soloist on Movement 4 Eyze Sheleg takes the solo a bit fast for my taste, whichever soprano sings that solo should take her time)

Updates and Concert Thursday!

Students and Families:

Our first concert has finally arrived!  I hope you are all excited for our first formal performance of the school year.  Make sure your concert attire is in pristine condition and clean and that all ladies have located their concert necklaces.

THURSDAY:
All singers should meet in the band room by 6:00pm to warmup.  We will get ourselves lined up just before the concert begins.  Please get plenty of sleep tonight and drink water to keep your voice healthy.  The program order is: Gloria, Ave Maria, MLK, Little David (then Magnum second to last in the orchestra set).  Everyone will be needed to help changeover the stage from chorus to orchestra after we finish the choir portion of the program.
Finally, remember, expressions, expressions, expressions!!  Every song is an opportunity to portray a different character on stage.  Always try to convey some level of emotion in every song you sing and stay engaged in that expression from the start to the end.  I look forward to making some wonderful music together.

Friday: Cookout and National Anthem

Students:

Meeting at Ahern Middle School (by gym entrance)

Cookout at 5:15pm, followed by Choir rehearsal 6:00pm, Full group run through of the National Anthem with everyone at 6:15pm, and then we will walk out together and sing the anthem at the game!

Wear your new Choir Music Shirts - layer appropriately for the weather.

Part Tracks for the Star Spangled Banner are up, please practice with them!!

This is our first chance to meet and greet and get to know the 8th grade music students!  You will have a chance to interact with them both at the cookout, during the rehearsal, and during the game.  Make the most of this opportunity -- don't be shy, introduce yourself and get to know them!  After we are done singing the anthem, try to sit with them (or convince some 8th graders) to come sit with you so that you can continue to hang out and have fun.  This experience will hopefully be a memorable one for these students and get them excited about other music opportunities to come later this year!

Weekly news and notes

Students:

Some reminders and updates.  We are starting to get into one of the busiest stretches of the fall. Please take care of your voices by getting plenty of rest, drinking lots of water, and avoiding yelling/overusing your voice.  This is especially important with concerts and auditions right around the corner!

Establish an effective practice routine that works for you and stick with it.  It's essential that you are practicing often and using the part tracks especially with more and more challenging music coming.  Consider adding breathing exercises and stretches into your routines.

This Friday is the cookout and national anthem.  We will have the cookout at 5:15, then choir rehearsal at 6, and do a full run through at approx 6:15 at the gym at Ahern middle.  It's very important that we are social and outgoing.  Wear your new shirts!

Voices and Strings concert a week from Thursday! Make sure you have your concert attire ready.

Tenor sectional Tuesday (anyone needing to make up a sectional should come too).  Sops and altos will come the following week when we will start MICCA and winter concert music.

Please turn in your money for districts ASAP if you have not done so already!

Please submit your vocal assessments to foxborochoir@gmail.com.

If you would like to submit a recording of yourself singing the senior district piece I would be happy to evaluate that as well.  I will make a sight singing practice sheet and put it on Dropbox very soon.

Lastly choir leadership team meeting (all leaders) Tuesday morning 6:45am.

See you in rehearsals! --Mr Raymond

Friday News and Notes

Vocal Students:

Thank you for your hard work this week!  You are all very talented singers, and I feel we are off to a great start.  I am confident that we are going to reach our goals and make some amazing music this year.  That being said, in order for us to continue progressing, it is important that everyone start getting into a quality practicing routine.  This will help cut down on rehearsal time spent going over notes and rhythms.  If you need assistance in forming a quality practice routine or you would ever like help on any of the music, please let me know and I would be glad to help you!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

-  Mixed Vocal Jazz Ensemble evening rehearsals will begin Tuesday 6:30-8:00pm.  These are required rehearsals.

-  Concert Choir sectionals will be on Tuesday's after school from 2:10pm(sharp)-3:00pm.  Each section will meet approximately once a month.  This is a graded component.  If you cannot make your sectional, you must see me to schedule a time to work together.  We will start these September 22nd.  I will give you a full schedule in rehearsal.

-  Any female student who is new to chorus needs to be fitted for and purchase the concert dress/blouse.  This concert dress/blouse will be used all four years of high school (so you will only need to buy it once).  Next week the choral leaders will begin the process of getting sizes for anyone who needs the dress.  The price of the dress is: $26, the price of the blouse is: $25, the price of the faux pearl necklace is $10, and shipping per dress is $15.  The total price per student will be $76.  Parents will need to make a check for $76 out to the "Town of Foxborough Music".  Once again, this is a one time fee, and your concert dress/blouse/necklace will be used throughout your high school career.

-  *SENIORS* FMA Pictures will be taken Tuesday September 15th @ Ahern Field 5:30pm (Vocal Jazz members make sure you make it back over to the rehearsal by 6:30pm)

-  Bottle & Can Drive: Saturday September 19th @ Town Hall Parking Lot: 9:00am-2:00pm.  Food is included.  This is a major fundraiser and a wonderful opportunity to make friends and connect with a variety of music students from FHS.

-  FMA Cookout is October 16th (more information to come)

-  Also, we will start Music T-Shirt and Sweatshirt orders soon as well as Jazz shirts!  I will be coordinating with the leaders to discuss this.

First Day Updates

Students:

It was a pleasure meeting all of you today!  It's going to be a great year, we have a lot of music to dive in to over the next couple of weeks, first we just have to get some logistical items out of the way.

Once again, make sure you subscribe to the blog by entering your email address to the right.  This is a class requirement for Concert Choir and both Jazz Choirs.

I have begun sending out Dropbox invites.  When you see yours in your email, log in to Dropbox and "accept" the invite, this will allow me to confirm that you are in the shared dropbox group.  On Dropbox please ONLY view or download the files, do not move or delete any files or folders.  If you did not receive an invite, I either do not have your email address, or I did not type your email address in correctly, please notify me.  This is also a class requirement for all choirs.

The mp3 file of the Jazz Choir audition song (Autumn Leaves) is in the dropbox folders for both jazz choirs.  Treble Jazz Choir members will audition during class Thursday and Mixed Jazz members will audition next Tuesday.

Finally, after discussing the matter with some of the leaders, I have decided to stay with the choir dresses that you used last year.  Any girls who are freshman or new to chorus will need to order a dress.  I will be coordinating with the student leaders to help those new students get dresses.

Also, feel free to follow the FHS Choir Twitter: @foxborochoir

Great to meet you all, can't wait to get singing!

For your social media purposes:

New FHS Vocal Department Twitter:  @foxborochoir
FHS Vocal Dept. Email Address: foxborochoir@gmail.com

Dropbox: Please make sure I have your email address so I can share the Dropbox with you

--------------------------------

All concert choir and vocal jazz students are required to be subscribed to this website and connected to the Dropbox account.  Following the FHS Vocal twitter account is optional/encouraged

--------------------------------

Over the next few days stayed tuned for updates.  All vocal jazz students will be auditioning and placed in either the Mixed Vocal Jazz Ensemble or Treble Jazz Choir.  This may require some schedule changing potentially.  I will work directly with any student who's schedule is impacted.  This audition ensures the correct placement of singers in the appropriate ensemble.

Please clear out dates of performances/auditions/festivals.  The calendar is posted on this website.

Keep an eye out on the dropbox account as I will be posting mp3 files and part tracks soon.

Looking forward to a fantastic school year!  More updates to come...
